يلحظ قارئ هذه الدراسة التي وضعها المستشرق الألماني بابر يوهانزن – أستاذ الدراسات الإسلامية في جامعة هارفرد – أنها تتبع مشروع الأديب والمفكر المصري محمد حسين هيكل (1888-1965) في إطار تحليلها للعلاقة بين الشرق العربي وأوروبا. لهذا تكاد الدراسة تنقسم قسمين كبيرين:
يتوقف المؤلف في القسم الأول عند كتابة هيكل الليبرالية الطابع، ويبيّن أبعاد خطابه الذي كان ينطوي على مشروع تحديثي. وتسعى الدراسة في هذه الأثناء إلى تبيان الخيوط المعرفية والجمالية التي صاغت نسيج هذا المشروع.
أما القسم الثاني من الكتاب فيرسم انكسار هذا المشروع الليبرالي الذي أدى إلى تصالح هيكل مع الإسلام والتراث العربي. وقد سعى يوهانزن لقراءة هيكل في ضوء هذا المنظور، وحاول أن يبيّن مقادر ما تنطوي عليه إسهاماته في هذا المجال من أهمية.
