"مالت الشمس عن السمت ولا يبدو للبدوي علامة تذكر. تعبت فرسه وغطاها العرق ودب العطش في خلاياه فتناول القربة وارتشف من فمها رشفات حارة لم تطفئ الظمأ. كل ما حوله ظمئ، الثعابين المتخفية في الرمال والعاقول والصخور الرملية المتآكلة بفعل ريح تصخب بغتة وتهمد بغتة. كل ما حوله موحش ميت وكأن الصحراء تابوت عتيق دفنت فيه الحياة منذ آدم. اعتلى مرتفعاً وانحدر في واد، قاده شعب وتلقفته هوة وما برحت الشمس دليله الوحيد نحو الشمال رأى ظله زحف مستطيلاً خلفه، وها هو الليل يبشر بقدومه دون أن يرى البدو. ومن بين وآخر تحلق في الأجواء البعيدة صقور ساكنة الأجنحة وتمرق قطاة فوق رأسه، ورأى مرة وكاد أن لا يصدق غراباً كبيراً أسرع بالاختفاء في سراب الشرق، وفي إحدى الممرات خيل له أن هاتفاً يهتف باسمه فأدار رأسه وأوقف الفرس ومد يده إلى السيف. تطلع حوله، كانت الصخور الرملية تتبعثر في الوادي الخفيض وأشجار الحافة تنشر ظلاً عميقا وحافة السماء تلتصق بالأرض عند نقطة معلومة. من الهاتف إذن؟ سأل روحه. صرف ذهنه إلى الليل القادم فعليه إيجاد مكان ينام فيه، آمناً لا تهاجمه فيه الضواري".
