لندن، عام 2012، استيقظ "مليك"، صاحب الاصول العربية، على صدمة مغادرة روحه خلال نومه، إلى مغامرات وتجارب خارجة عن واقعه المألوف، حيث تسافر روحه إلى أجساد أخرى وأماكن لم يزرها في حياته من قبل، ليقرر "مليك" توثيق يومياته وحكايات من حوله من شخصيات في أوراق، إلا أن انعكاس التجارب التي تمر بها روحه أثّرت بشكل مباشر على حياته. ومع مرور الوقت تتبدل حالته وشخصيته كلياً، لتدخل منعطفات لم تكن في حسبانه.
من أجواء الرواية نقرأ:
"... اسمي مليك حتّات، أخذت اسم عائلة أمي لأني باختصار لا أعرف أبي، أما اسم "مليك" فقد كان وقعه غريب على مسامع أهل الغرب، لكنه مميّز بذات الوقت. ولدت في أحد الأحياء الفقيرة المليئة بالمهاجرين في شرق لندن، حيث تختلط هناك الروائح الثلاث الشهيرة مع بعضها؛ البهارات بأنواعها، العطر الرخيص، والجنس الدنيء. أما حياتي فأختصرها بأنني عشت طفولتي ومراهقتي وأول أيام شبابي مع أمي ذات الأصول العربية؛ كانت أعواماً متنوعة الأشكال من تشرد إلى فقر شديد ثم أقل ثم أشد، حتى جاء ذلك اليوم الذي افترقنا فيه، لكن من دون أن يتركني الجوع والعوز، وكأنهما لعنة أصابتني، لكنني تحمّلت وقاومت حتى هزمت الظروف بقوة وثبات لم يفارقاني، إلى أن جاء اليوم المنشود وأصبحت بعده غنياً، والمال ما عاد همي أبداً، وذلك حين عملت في إحدى شركات المقاولات العالمية، لاستخدام كل ما تعلمته بالحياة للنجاح في عملي، ومع ذلك فأنا وحيد، دائماً كنت هكذا، حتى بعد كل ما حدث في الشهور الماضية، فكل شخص يدور في فلكي هو وهْم أعرف أنه سيزول عاجلاً أم آجلاً، رغم أن أهم ما يميزني أنني أنتمي إلى فصيلة الوسيمين جداً، وأصحاب الذكاء الفطري الخارق. كان ذلك قبل ذاك الحلم، فهدوئي الشديد، وتحمّلي للمصائب، وقدرتي على التميّز والتفوّق في أحلك المواقف، أمور بطبيعة الحال لم تأتِ من ماضٍ سهل أبداً، استُبدلِ كلّه بضعف وعصبية شديدين وعدم اتزان بالأفكار، مع مستقبل مجهول أعيشه؛ بدأت معانيه مع أول رنّة منبه تلت ذلك الحلم.
