يكشف ماركيز في الجزء الأول من المذكرات والذي ضم 500 صفحة من القطع الكبير في الترجمة المصرية عن أيام طفولته الأولى منذ السنة السابعة واصفا كيف نجا من مذبحة عام 1928 بمنطقة الموز في كولومبيا، كما يتذكر فترة الطفولة الخصبة وهي مرحلة تكوينه الأساسية التي أعدته ليكون كاتبا متميزا بل من أبرز المبدعين عالميا.
ويبدأ كتاب "أن تعيش لتحكي" بطلب والدته أن يرافقها إلى قرية أراكاتاكا لبيع منزل جده فتتزاحم في رأسه ذكريات الطفولة الأولى التي عاشها هناك في منزل الكولونيل السابق إبان الحرب الأهلية.
ويصور ماركيز في سيرته واقع القرى الكولومبية حيث عاش متنقلا مع أسرته بحثا عن الرزق وهربا من الفقر الذي كاد يكون ملازما له طوال مراحل حياته الأولى وعودته إلى قريته بعد رحيل الجد ومرض الجدة وعدم قدرتها على الاستمرار في إعالته.
وكذلك يسترجع حياة والده والأسرة التي لا تنفصل عما يجري حولها، بل إن حياة أفراد أسرته كانت نموذجا مصغرا لحياة القرى التي تنقلوا بينها.
ويذكر الكاتب كيف تغير حلمه في أن يكون موسيقيا جوالا تحت تأثير والده عازف الكمان وأمه التي ترنم الأهازيج الشعبية ليكون طبيبا قبل أن يصبح في محطته الأخيرة كاتبا وشاعرا إذ تمت ترجمة أعماله إلى معظم اللغات الحية وبيع منها ما يزيد عن 40 مليون نسخة إلى جانب عمله صحفيا.
