يحوي هذا الكتاب روايات يمتزج فيها الواقع بالخيال العلمي في أحداث تبدو حقيقية. تتناول قصة (الحرائق التي ألهبت الذاكرة) عيش مهندس في ثقب الزمن إلى الوراء، ومعايشته حديثاً مقتل طبيب وابنته وحرق داره منذ القديم، ثم عودته إلى عصره في لغز محير غير قابل للتفسير العلمي.
ويزور المهندس خرائب الدار المحروقة قديماً والتي عايش حرقها حديثاً، ليجد في صندوق خشبي مخطوطة قديمة بالسريالية من يحوي هذا الكتاب روايات يمتزج فيها الواقع بالخيال العلمي في أحداث تبدو حقيقية. تتناول قصة (الحرائق التي ألهبت الذاكرة) عيش مهندس في ثقب الزمن إلى الوراء، ومعايشته حديثاً مقتل طبيب وابنته وحرق داره منذ القديم، ثم عودته إلى عصره في لغز محير غير قابل للتفسير العلمي.
ويزور المهندس خرائب الدار المحروقة قديماً والتي عايش حرقها حديثاً، ليجد في صندوق خشبي مخطوطة قديمة بالسريالية من تأليف الطبيب وأشياء قديمة لابنته، ويتزوج فتاة تشبه ابنة الطبيب ويسمي مولودته باسمها. تروي قصة (محاكمة من نوع آخر) استغلال قاض فقير منصبه للظلم والثراء، وزواجه من ابنة تاجر متهم أهداه قصراً، ويصاب القاضي بنوبة فيظن موته، وتقبل أمه لتحاكمه وهو مغمى يسمعها على انحرافاته، ويحاول التاجر دفنه حياً، فيصحو ويعيد الحقوق إلى أصحابها، فتنفصل عنه زوجته وأولاده، ويتزوج أخرى في حيه القديم وينجب منها.
وتحكي قصة (الموت حياً) حالة مريضة أنجبها والد مدمن خمر وأم بلهاء، تستعيد حيويتها كلما تزوجت شاباً نضراً تنقل إليه أمراضها فيموت، وتصطاد شاباً جامعياً يشك أهله بصحتها، ويتزوجها فيموت، لتبحث مجدداً عن صيد آخر.
وتتناول قصة (أمومة لا تعرف اليأس) الظن بموت طفل لريفية ولدته دون قابلة، وتفرُّ به لطبيب المدينة متجاوزة أخطار ليل موحش، فيعيش، وتنهار حفرة كلسية كادت تقضي على زوجها فتنقذه.
