تعتبر رواية "الوباء" للكاتب هاني الراهب من الأعمال الروائية التي تناولت فكرة الأرض من زاوية خاصة.. ألا وهي الأرض المعنى. فقد قدَّم الأرض من خلال تلك الأجيال المتوالية، جيلاً بعد جيل.. مختلفًا ومتنوعًا في الخصائص والملامح، ولا يثبت إلا الأرض المكان التي تحولت الى معنى. فالأرض تبدو جلية في بداية ونهاية الأحداث المتصارعة، وهي التي تكشف عن المتناقضات بين الأفراد (أفراد سلالة الشيخ السنديان). فالجد الأكبر "السنديان" نال مكانته الاجتماعية وسلطانه بسبب الأرض.. وعلى مدار قرنين، جيلاً بعد جيل تتوالى الأجيال والمصائر، وتعبر الأرض عن نفسها بل عن دورها عندما يموت الجد الأكبر وتبدأ عملية تقسيم الأرض.. حيث يبدأ الصراع، وتنكشف دخائل الناس؛ لتُكْشَف العيوب.. كل العيوب.
تجسد "الوباء" فنيا التطورات السياسية والاجتماعية في سوريا بعد عام 1963 وترصد التحولات الاجتماعية الكبيرة التي أصابت بعض الشرائح الريفية المنضوية تحت لواء العسكر والتي أصبح لها القول الفصل في السياسة.
