يقول المؤلفان في مقدمة كتابهما "الهاجريون" بأن الحضارة الإسلامية هي الحضارة الوحيدة في العالم التي استمرت في حقبتها التشكيلية إلى ما بعد الألف الميلادية الأولى. وظهورها بالتالي يشكل حدثاً غير اعتيادي، ويسبب جملة من الأسباب ذات الصلة، يبدو الحدث حدثاً متميزاً، وهذا الكتاب محاولة لتفسير ذلك فعند ما قام المؤلفان بمحاولتهما هذه، تبينا مقاربة في موضوع الحضارة الإسلامية تختلف بشكل ملموس عن مقاربة الكتابات الأكثر تقليدية التي تناولت هذا الحقل. أولاً: روايتهما لتشكل الإسلام كدين هي رواية جديدة جذرياً، وهي تخرج عن النمط السائد منذ القرن السابع الميلادي، وتعتمد على استخدامهما المكثف لمجموعة صغيرة من المصادر غير الإسلامية المعاصرة لتلك الحقبة التي تم تجاهل شواهدها حتى الآن. ثانياً: بذل المؤلفان، الكثير من الطاقة، على الصعيدين الدراسي والفكري، للأخذ بجدية الحقيقة الواضحة القائلة أن تشكل الحضارة الإسلامية حدث في مرحلة متأخرة من مراحل الأنتيك، بل في جزء مميز منه. والأنتيك، كم يني المؤلفان، هي أزمة سبقت العصور الوسطى وإفرازاتها المادية والثقافية. وأخيراً، وعلى حد قولهما أيضاً، هما شرعا ونبوع من الطيش في خلق مخطط متماسك عام لأفكار في حقل لم يحفر العلم الأسس في الكثير من ميادينه بعد.
