لم يكن للأستاذ "عادل مظلوم" أدنى فكرة عما وراء الرسالة التى حملها إليه ساعى البريد فى هذا الصباح الغريب. كان قد استيقظ كعادته فى الثامنة وانتهى من معالجة آثار النوم المتقلب فى أقل من نصف الساعة، وتناول كوب الشاى باللبن الذى أعدته له زوجته بتذمرها المعتاد لقرب نفاد مخزون الشاي أو السكر أو ارتفاع سعر اللبن، أو أى شىء آخر من هذا القبيل.. وقبـَّل جبين أبنائه مودعًا إياهم قبل أن ينطلقوا إلى مدرستهم.. تمامًا كما يفعل به كل صباح يمر بحياته العادية.. وبينما كان يعقص آخر زرار فى قميصه المشتكى من كثرة الغسيل والكى، سمع خبطًا على الباب وصوت زوجته يصرخ من ناحية المطبخ " مين؟ " ورد خافت من وراء الباب المغلق " بوسطه "... كانت تلك أول مرة، منذ تلغراف إعلامه بوفاة أبيه قبل خمس سنوات، يدق فيها ساعى البريد بابه، فتوجس شرًا.. ولكنه لم يجعل ذلك يدهشه أو يعكر من مزاجه، إذ أنه كان قد اعتاد أن يحتفظ بمزاجه ثابتًا على وتيرة واحدة، لا يعلو أو يهبط مؤشره مهما يجابه من حصاد الأيام.. فاتجه ببرود ناحية الباب، وفتحه ومد يده بحركة روتينية موقعًا على ورقة الإعلام بالاستلام، وكأنه يمارس عملاً يوميَاً معتاداً، وشكر الرجل بهدوء وأغلق الباب.. وقلب البرقية بين يديه ولاحظ الحروف الأجنبية عليها، ثم أدرك أنها مرسلة إليه "شخصياً" من القنصل الأمريكى بالقاهرة.. وجلس "عادل مظلوم" على الأريكة المقابلة لباب الشقة وقد قطب جبينه وشرع يفتح الرسالة، حين جاءته زوجته من المطبخ مجففة يديها فى قماش فستانها قائلة "خير يا عادل".. وهنا قرأ بصوت متأنٍّ " الأستاذ عادل مظلوم.. أنتم مدعوون لمقابلة القنصل الأمريكى يوم الإثنين القادم فى تمام الساعة التاسعة صباحًا وذلك لمناقشة أمر هام "..
