يعد التدريس بجانبيه النظري والعملي من أكثر القضايا جدلا وأكثرها شيوعاً. وإذا أردنا تحسين مدارسنا، علينا أن نطبق في الصف ما نعرفه حول البشر، بوصفهم مخلوقات ذكية تتعلم وتفكر. فمنذ بداية الثورة المعرفية في علم النفس عام (1985)، فقد ادعى هؤلاء الثوريون أن العقول البشرية والحاسوب متشابهة في جوهرها، إلى حدٍ كبير. وان نظرية واحدة هي النظرية الحاسوبية يمكنها أن تقود البحث في كل من علم النفس وعلم الحاسوب. وإن هذه الثورة بدأت كحركة وتحولت إلى نظام سمي علماً معرفياً. والعلماء المعرفيون يدرسون: كيف يعمل عقلنا وكيف نفكر ونتذكر ونتعلم، لذا فإننا بحاجة لطرق تدريس جديدة، ولمداخل جديدة للتربية والتدريس. إننا نتوقع اليوم، على خلاف الأمر الذي عليه خلال العشرين سنة الماضية، أن يُترك الطلاب اليافعون المدرسة، وهم يمتلكون القدرة على أداء مستويات من الكفاءة، والقدرة على استخدام مهارات التفكير، كما إن مدرسي المعاهد والجامعات يتوقعون دخول طلاب يمتلكونها أيضاً. وهذا إذا رغبنا في أشياء أفضل وليست مختلفة، فإننا نحتاج كما ادعى جلاسر (Glaser)، إلى أفضل نظرية حول التعليم: نحتاج تطبيق على التعلم. إن هناك حاجة ماسة لرؤية تربوية جديدة، تفوق حاجاتنا إليها في الميادين الأخرى إن المدرسة الحديثة في المكان الأكثر تأثيراً على المتعلم في حياتيه الاجتماعية ومستقبله الاقتصادي، وبخاصة إذا كانت تعمل على رسم ملامح هويته، ونظرته إلى ذاته.
