دوّن الإمام الشعراني في هذا الكتاب جملة من النعم والأخلاق التي تفضل الله عز وجل بها عليه عند دخوله في محبة القوم من العارفين بالله، وكان باعثه، على تدوينها أموراً أحدها، ليقتدي به إخوانه فيها، فيتخلقوا بها، ثانيها، قصده بذلك دوام الشكر لله تعالى بعد موته، وذلك مدة بقاء هذا الكتاب، فإن شكر اللسان ينقضي بموت العبد، وشكر الله في الكتاب قد يتأخر أثره بعده، فيكون كالنائب في الشكر عن المؤلف وكأن الشاكر لم يمت. ثالثها: إعلام أهل عصره بدرجته في العلم والعمل، ليقتدوا به. رابعها إقتداءه بالسلف الصالح رضي الله عنهم، وقد سبقه إلى مثل ذلك جماعة ذكروا مناقبهم في طبقاتهم تحدثاً باسمة الله عز وجل وتعريفاً بأحوالهم، ليأخذ الناس عنهم العلم والطريق. لقد جعل الإمام العارف الشعراني كتابه هذا لا افتخاراُ على الأقران، ولا طلباً للدنيا ومناصبها وجاهها، وإنما هو للإقتداء بالسلف الصالح، وللاطلاع على معارف أحد العارفين بالله وأخلاقه.
