مثل لوحة تقدح ألوانها وتصطرع، تشكّل ريم حبيب في هذه الرواية بلاداً تحتضر، وشخصيات طال بها العسف وأمضّها، فتولّتَّ كلٌّ منها حكايتها، واشتبكت الحكايات كما الأقدار والصَبَوات والآهات، وتلونت لغة الرواية، وهي تتوثب مثل أنفاس حرّى، أو مثل طفلة تزقزق وترتعد في آن معاً.
ربما يكون قلباً العاشقين نايا ومتيم آخر ما يتبقى من البلاد التي تزدرد أوجاعها جيلاً بعد جيل، لكن الحب أيضاً يحتضر، بعد ما ضاقت السماء بكواكبها، وضاق البحر بأمواجه، فتدافع الشباب والشابات - بخاصة - إلى الشوارع والساحات، يفكّون ما نشأوا عليه من (أمّيّة) بالمظاهرات والسلمية، فتنبض الأفئدة حريةً وصداقةً وعشقاً وأخوةً ومعرفةً وجراءة.
غير أن الوحش المتأبد، بالمرصاد، وكما في ألعاب الطفولة، سرعان ما صارت الرؤوس تتقاطر مدفونة بظهور من يتقدمون ويتقدمن، وإذا بالكاتب منصور غنّام - مثلاً - يبدل لحية غيفارا بلحية الشيخ، وبالمسلحين - مثلاً - يرمون لميا الناشطة من أجل المخطوفين، بخطف ابنها، بينما بالطائفية تنشب أظفارها بين الأم وابنتها... إلى أن يلعلع السؤال المذعور: خلصت الحرب؟...
في غياب أو إلتباس الجواب، ما عاد أحد مكترثاً بالوصول، إذ تماهى الليل بالنهار والنهار، بالليل: قتلاً أو نفاقاً أو إغتصاباً أو خطفاً أو عصبويةً أو تجهيلاً أو إفقاراً...
ولئن كان كل ذلك هو (المخدع) فهو أيضاً ليس اللوحة كلها، ولا الحكايات كلها، لذلك تنادينا ريم حبيب إلى هذه الرواية، ولذلك نلبي النداء.
