لم يكتب أحد من الفلاسفة عن موضوع الملابس؛ لأنه أمر بديهى، فكل منا له ذوقه الخاص فيما يرتديه، إلا أن الكاتب الإسكتلندي توماس كارليل قرر أن يكتب فى هذا الموضوع ، حيث عالج موضوع الملابس بطريقة مبتكرة جدًّا،وفكر فيها بخلاف ما نحن نفكر .
بدأ بالملابس المادية، وانتقل للملابس اللحمية " الجسد "، وأخيرًا الملابس الفكرية. وقد ابتكر شخصية الأستاذ الهردياجونيس،كما أوضح لنا ذلك عباس العقاد فى كتابه ساعات بين الكتب.
وترجم لنا الكتاب الأستاذ طه السباعى ، إلا أن ترجمته كانت حرفية للغاية، الأمر الذي جعل الكتاب عسيرًا على فهم القارئ ، كما أن نصوص الكتاب لا تتناسب مع عناوينه؛ مما جعل القارئ فى تشتت مستمر، الأمر الذي دفعني لإعادة صياغة الكتاب بأسلوبي الخاص وبحسب فكر هذا الكاتب الإسكتلندي
