كتب توماس هوبز كتابه الشهير اللفياثان في فترة مضطربة من التاريخ الأنكليزي حيث كانت المملكة تعيش حرب أهلية بين الملكيين بقيادة الملك تشارلز الأول من جهة و البرلمانيين من جهة أخرى في الفترة ما بين (1642-1651). هذه الحرب جاءت كسيرورة لحالة فوضى عاشتها أنكلتر لأكثر من 100 عام نتيجة النزاعات البروتستانتية-الكاثوليكية, حيث صعد في تلك الفترة مزيج من الملوك و الملكات البروتستانت و الكاثوليك مما كان يعني تقلبات سياسية كبرى و اضطهاد ضد الكنيسة و أتباعها المعاكسة للملك أو الملكة
