وفي الرواية يضعنا الروائي أمام شخصيات متنافرة، متفلسفة، متصارعة نفسياً، وغارقة في أحلام اليقظة، يسوقها في قالب له طبع الحدة في فهم سلوكها وتصرفاتها، وهو في ذلك ينحو منحى أسلوب أساطين الرواية الروسية والأوروبية والأميركية، حتى يشعر القارىء أن كل شخصية لا علاقة لها بمن سبقها، لكن السياق العام للسرد يبين ضرورة مثل هذه الإنتقالات السريعة، سواء في الجملة الواحدة، أو الفقرة الواحدة.

بقي أن نشير أن رواية الكفارة رشحت لعدد من الجوائز أهمها جائزة رواية العام التي تمنحها مؤسسة ويتبرير. كما اقتبست الرواية للسينما في شريط أخرجه جو رايت عن سيناريو أعده كريستوفر هامتون .. وكان من تمثيل جيمز ماك أفوي، وكييرا نايتلي، وفانيسا ريدغريف.
