نشرت لأول مرة في أبريل 1950، وتاريخ التأليف – كما هو موضح في المخطوطة – هو 18 سبتمبر / 9 نوفمبر 1949. و في نفس العام من نشرها ، حصلت على جائزة ستريجا. و بعد بضعة أشهر ، أنهى بافيزه حياته في فندق في تورينو. و بالنسبة للطقوس القديمة لحضارة الفلاحين كان القمر والنيران اساسا لها ،ومن ثم فإن "أنجيل" - الراوي - كان ينظر بعدم ثقة. فهو لقيط ورحب به اثنان من الفلاحين للحصول على بدل إعانة التبني ، ثم ينتقل إلى مزرعة "مورا" لكسب راتبه الأول ، ثم يغادر إلى أمريكا بعد خدمته العسكرية في جنوة. ومم حظه يجد انفتاحا مختلفا.
