إن الهنود واليونانيين والعرب، من أعرق أمم الشرق في البلاغة؛ وقد تميزت آدابهم باشتمالها علي كثير من الأقوال الحكيمة، والأمثال السائرة، والمواعظ البليغة؛ فللهنود كليلة ودمنة، ولليونان خرافات إيسوب، وللعرب الحكم البارعة الموجزة، والأمثال المضروبة السائرة، والقرآن العظيم الذى أعجز الجن والإنس أن يأتوا بمثله.
وقد شاعت حكم القدماء وأمثالهم وأشعارهم وخرافاتهم في عصورهم، ثم انتقلت بعدهم إلي الأجيال الخالفة، وقلما خلا بعدهم عصر أو مجتمع، من التمثل بأمثالهم، والاستشهاد بحكمهم وآرائهم، فيما يكتب في الدين والأخلاق، أو في السياسة والاجتماع، بل قلما تخلو منها أحاديث المجالس، ومحاورات الناس في الأندية والأسواق.
ومن أعظم ما وصل إلينا من تراث اليونان وحكمهم التهذيبية مجموعة من خرافات إيسوب، وهو يعسوب أدبهم، ولقمان حكمتهم؛ وقد حليت أيدينا بنسخة كاملة منها، ترجمها إلي الإنجليزية الأستاذ جيوفرى فايلر تاونسند فإذا هي من خير الزاد، وأنفعه في تنشئة الأحداث، وتهذيب اليافعين، وخاصة إذ يكونون في سن اللدونة، أقبل للنصح والتأديب.
وقد رأينا المعلمين منذ بداية هذا القرن دائبين علي اقتباس بعض هذه الدرر الغوالى، فيما يؤلفون من كتب تعليمية للأحداث، للقراءة والتهذيب؛ فأحببنا أن ننقل هذه المجموعة كاملة إلي العربية، لما لها من عظيم الفائدة علي القارئين من الأحداث والشداة، الذين ينفعهم التعليم والتأديب غير المباشر؛ ولما لها من فائدة للمتفكهين والراغبين في المتعة والتسلية الأدبية الخالصة؛ إذ يقرءون سفرا منقطع النظير،غنياً بفكاهاته وملحه وطرائفه.
علي أنها بعد ذلك كله ذات فائدة للأدباء والدارسين، والباحثين في تواريخ الآداب القديمة.
