يعتبر الفلك الكروي أحد فروع علم الفلك، والذي يبحث في وصف وتحديد مواقع الأجرام السماوية في السماء، وهو يعتمد بشكل مباشر على الطرق الرياضية والمثلثات الكروية، وقياسات الأرصاد الفلكية.
ويعد علم الفلك الكروي من العلوم القديمة، فقد عرف واستخدم منذ القدم في الكثير من التطبيقات الفلكية، التي كانت تعين الإنسان في حياته، ومن هذه التطبيقات على سبيل المثال لا الحصر حساب الوقت، ومعرفة المواقيت الفلكية المختلفة، سواء المدنية منها أو الدينية، بالإضافة إلى الملاحة، والإهتداء في البر والبحر، وعلى ذلك قام الفلكيين القدامى برصد وقياس النجوم لمعرفة إحداثياتها، وكذلك فعلوا مع الشمس والقمر والكواكب، ووضعوها في جداول، وصنعوا لأجلها الأزياج الفلكية.
يأتي هذا الكتاب كإضافة جديدة إلى المكتبة العربية، ليساهم ولو بالقليل في شرح جزء من هذا العلم، ولقد جعلته في ثمانية فصول، تناول كل فصل منها جانب محدد من جوانب الفلك الكروي.
