لا تزال الفلسفة الألمانية تُشكِّل جوهر الفكر الحديث، ويُلقي هذا الكتاب من سلسلة «مقدمة قصيرة جدًّا» الضوءَ على كبار الفلاسفة الألمان، بما فيهم كانط وهيجل وماركس ونيتشه وهايدجر وهابرماس، فضلًا عن بعض المفكِّرين الذين لم يُوفَّوا قدرهم من أمثال فريدريش شليجل ونوفاليس وشلايرماخر وشيلينج.
يرى أندرو بووي أن الفلسفة الألمانية تقدِّم وسائل لفهم العالم المعاصر؛ لأنها مَلمَحٌ إشكالي من التاريخ الألماني، ومَنْهلٌ مهم لمحاولة التوافُق مع الحداثة. كما أنه يلقي الضوء على القيمة المهمَّة التي يمكن أن تسهم بها أفكار الفلسفة الألمانية في معالجة الأحداث والمعضلات الحديثة، بما فيها الهولوكوست.
