يحكي بير هيرنجرين حكاية له مع أخيه الصغير وهو طفل: «من الدروس الأولى التي تعلمتها في العصيان المدني كان عند ولادة أخي الصغير... ولقد كنت مفتوناً بإصراره البريء على تنفيذ ما يشاء وبالطريقة التي يشاء، وعندما لا يرغب في عمل شئ فإنه ببساطة يرفض ولا يساوم على هذا الرفض وهو ما كان مغايراً تماماً لما كنت عليه حيث أنني كنت ابناً مطيعاً جداً.
ولا أقصد بهذا أنني لم أكن أحتج ) protest ( فلقد كنت أصيح بشكل عنيف وأصرخ وأجادل، ولكن عندما ينتهي هذا الاحتجاج والصراخ فإنني أنصاع في نهاية الأمر. كان هذا هو التباين بيني وبين أخي والذي ساعدني كثيراً في أن أفهم بوضوح الاختلاف بين مفهوم المقاومة ) resistance ( ومفهوم الاحتجاج ) .»)protest وتتسم كلمة المقاومة اليوم بالنمطية وذلك لأن كل أشكال الاحتجاج - وللأسف - أصبحت فجأة تسمى مقاومة.
