ربما يكون إعادة نشر مسرحية "العصفور الأحدب" للأديب السوري محمد الماغوط بعد مرور أربعون عاماً على كتابتها ونشرها أول مرة ضروري في عصر تشهد فيه المجتمعات العربية تحولات درامية حاولت أن تتخطى خلاله انتكاسات وإرهاصات جعلت من الإنسان العربي والسوري بالتحديد كائناَ مجلاً وإنساناً مع وقف التنفيذ، يبقى معلقاً بانتظار حتمية ما، كما هي حال شخصيات هذه المسرحية التي فقدت حريتها في مقابل أن يأخذ الحاكم شرعيته حتى وإن كانت مزيفة، يقول "محمد الماغوط: "كما أمظرت الحرية في أي مكان في العالم يسارع كل نظام عربي إلى رفع المظلة فوق شعبه خوفاً عليه من الزكام".
في "العصفور الأحدب" يعري محمد الماغوط ممارسات السلطة الحاكمة في السجون بأسلوب رمزي وبشخصيات من واقع الحياة اختار لهم أسماء "القزم، صانع الأحذية، الكهل، العازب، والمجهول.. يدير حواراً فيما بينهم، يجسد من خلاله الحلم بالحرية، وبهذا يكون الحلم في المسرحية يقوم بوظيفة مكملة للوقائع، أما الذكريات عند السجناء فمهمتها التخفيف من قساوة الحاضر، وقد تكون حزبية يتَم إسقاط الحاضر عليها، وأما النقاشات المتبادلة فتشكل جزءاً لا يتجزء من السرد الذي يتوالد بعضه من البعض الآخر ضمن الحكاية الأم حتى مواجهة مصيرها المجهود.
