تُعَد الحرب الصليبية الثالثة واحدةً من أكثر الحروب إلهامًا للمؤرخين والأدباء على حدٍّ سواء؛ حيث حفَلت بالكثير من الأحداث التي جعلت منها مادةً غنية لخيال الأدباء. وفي هذه الرواية يُسلِّط «والتر سكوت» الضوءَ على مراحل مختلفة ومتباينة في نظرةِ الشرقي المسلم والغربي المسيحي كلٍّ منهما إلى الآخر؛ فكلٌّ منهما يُدافع عن بيت المَقدس الذي يحمل قداسةً لديه. وبينما يَستعدُّ الملك «ريتشارد قلب الأسد» للاستيلاء على بيت المَقدس، إذا بالمرض يشلُّ تفكيره ويُوهِن جسده حتى كاد يهلك، وفي هذه الأثناء يظهر القائد المسلم «صلاح الدين الأيوبي» ليُعالجه بالطلسم، الذي قدَّمه هديةً لأحد رجال «ريتشارد»، فصار بعد انتهاء الحرب مَقصدًا لشفاء المجانين ومَن يُعانون من النزيف، حتى أَوقفت الكنيسة العملَ به باعتباره سحرًا.
