إن رواية الضفة المظلمة تعتبر متحفاً يحتفظ ببقايا التألق الاستعماري الاسباني في أمريكا اللاتينية، مكان مثالي لبلبلة البطل، وإدخاله المنطقة المتاخمة لحدود اليقظة، رواية حول الذاكرة والحلم، حول تذكر ماض واستحضاره من خلال قصص حاضر يختلط فيه الواقعي بالمتخيل وبالذاكرة الطفولية في عتمة الأدغال وضيائها، حيث تشكل الأحلام رحلة نحو الأصول . بطل الضفة المظلمة يستغرق في التقاء كل هذه القصص في أعماقه، وتنتهي فترة إقامته في بلد أمريكي إلى اللقاء. في مكان من الذاكرة، بحكايات الطفولة القديمة، ويحمله المتخيل خلال رحلة نهرية عبر الأدغال إلى الضفة الأخرى حيث ينتهي وعي الحلم في التحول إلى رحلة نحو أصوله ، وفي اليوم الذي تؤرخه الرواية يشعر البطل كما لو أن الاستيقاظ قد مُنح له لأول مرة ، كما لو أنه خروج أولي من حلم غير متناهٍ كان غارقاً فيه منذ بداية الزمان ، ولأسباب يعجز عن سبر غورها. لذلك ارتاب في أن وراء المظهر الحقيقي لكل ما يحيط به في الزمان والجغرافية ، يمكن لتشابكات حلم متينة أن تكون آخذة بمحاصرته ، كهلوسات شاذة تقلب اتجاه الزمن وترمم بقايا زمن حي .
