الصرف هو علم يبحث عن أبنية الكلمة العربية وصيغتها وبيان حروفها من أصالة، أو زيادة أو حذف، أو صحة، أو إعلال، أو إبدال... إلى غير ذلك. هذا وإن القواعد الصرفية ليست مجرد معلومات تفهم وتحفظ؛ ولكنها وسيلة إلى غاية، هي وسيلة إلى استقامة اللسان على أساليب معينة، وأنماط من النطق خاصة، والكتاب الذي بين أيدينا مؤلف صرفي، يتتبع التغيرات الحادثة في ألفاظ الكلمات، كي يتغير لأجلها المعنى بالزيادة أو النقص. وقد أفاد هذا المؤلف من سابقيه من مؤلفات الصرف أصيلة ومعاصرة إفادة جيدة واعية، انتهت إلى حسن الترتيب، وجودة العرض، ويسر المعلومات، مع الوفاء بالأمثلة وتقديم أسئلة للمناقشة يثبت بها القارئ مما أفاد به من مقروء.
حاول المؤلف ان يقرب الصرف الى لغة العصر والراغبين في تحصيله اليوم في سبعة وعشرين بابا في الميزان الصرفي والقلب والحروف الاصلية والزائدة والصحيح والمعتل واسناد الافعال الى الضمائر واسماء الزمان والمكان والآلة والجمع، والتصغير والنسب والاعلال والابدال وغيرها موردا على ذلك الامثلة من آيات واحاديث وكلام السلف وكلام الادباء من قدامى كالجاحظ او معاصرين كالمنفلوطي واحمد امين، واشعار، مرتبا ذلك في جداول تقريبا للفهم، وقد جعل الهامش مساعدا للمتن شارحا او موضحا اوموثقا، والكتاب مع ذلك جاء في حجم لطيف لا يبعث الملل
