توارى المعلم عن الأعين. لزم الرجال أماكنهم من شدة الذهول. وجد شطا الحجرى نفسه في بؤرة منصهرة الأبصار والصيف. أراد أن يخرج من الحرج بكلمة اعتذار فقال:
أعترف بأننى مازلت أحبو في الذيل، ولكنها إرادة الله.
فقال رجل مغلفا قوله بنبرة نذير:
بل اخترت بإرادتك يا شطا!
فقال في استسلام:
إنما يجرى كل شئ بمشيئة الله.
فقال آخر بخشونة:
للشيطان أيضاً دور في رحاب الفتونة.
فتغير مزاج شطا وقال بعناد:
لقد أعددت كفني يوم انضممت إليكم.
فتلاطمت أصوات في سخرية:
عفارم.. عفارم! الطموح مهلكة ولكنه حلم الفتوات!
ضاق شطا بصمت طباع الديك أكثر مما ضاق بسخريات الرجال. استأذن ناهضاً ثم غاص في الظلمة.
استقبلته أمه في بدروم عمارة الجبلى. ستهم الشهيرة بالغجرية تستيقظ عادة مع الفجر لتتهيأ ليوم عمل كادح. قال:
حدث الليلة أمر عجيب.
وقص عليها ما جرى. عكس وجهها المتجعد الكالح انفعالات متضابة، تفكت حتى وجمت ثم قالت:
يا لك من متعجل!
فتحامى الجدل فقالت:
إنك لمجنون يتحدى الجميع بلا تدبر.
فاتجه نحو منامه فوق الكنبة صامتاً فقالت:
لم يبق لي من ذكر سواك، أخواتك في بيوت أزواجهن، لعنة الله على شيطانك.
فتمتم بامتعاض:
لا تتوقعين إلا الشر؟!
أتحسب أن الفتونة لهو؟!
على رغم قلقه واضطرام أفكاره فقد أسلمه الإرهاق إلى نوم عميق.
