إذا كانت السيمياء موضوعة منذ نشأتها، فإن التأويل لم يكن كذلك. لأنه بدأ في الأساس، ربما مع بدء اللغة من الاهتمام بالبحث عن المعنى القصدي الذي يخفيه المؤلف في مكان ما من نصه. ولذلك فقد احتضنت التأويل الاتجاهات الفلسفية والأدبية الذاتية والشخصانية والظاهرية، التي بدأت تهتم بذوات المؤلفين في محاولة لترميم المعاني الكامنة ضمناً في نصوصهم. غير ا، هذا "التأويل" سرعاً، ما تعدد وانقسم أيضاً. وهكذا ظهر التأويل بمعانيه الموضوعية والذاتية والنصية واللغوية والتشريعية، لينافسه فيما وراء التأويل.
وكتاب "السيمياء والتأويل" الذي نقلت صفحاته هو محاولة للمزاوجة بين السيمياء الموضوعية والتأويل الذاتي، وبين علمية المقروء وفاعلية القارئ. أنه مراجعة للمدارس النقدية الحديثة في ضوء اهتمامها بهذين الحقلين، ومحاولة لتلمس الحدود المشتركة بينهما.
ويمتاز الكتاب بقدرته على مخاطبة القارئ المتوسط، ولكنه في الوقت نفسه يثري فهم القارئ المطلع، ويثير أمامه كثيراً من الأسئلة. ولا يخفي المؤلف أنه يصل عند بعض النقاط إلى ما يمكن اعتباره نقطة قطيعة مع الموروث السيميائي. ولا يكتفي الكتاب بطرح التصورات والمفاهيم النظرية، بل يلاحقها في لحظة اشتعالها الفعلية على النصوص، ويقابل بينهما على مستويات متعددة، مضيئاً كل مقترب بما يماثله أو يخالفه، ومحاولاً في الوقت نفسه تقديم وجهة نظر شخصية تتابع التفصيلات الدقيقة، دون أن تغفل الانتباه إلى تمحيص أسسها. وبقي أن نشير إلى أن هذا الكتاب يشكل الحلقة الثانية في سلسلة ثلاث كتب أصدرها شولز، أولها: البنيوية في الأدب (1974) وقد ترجم إلى العربية، وثانيها هذا الكتاب، وثالثها كتاب سلطة النص(1986).
