عندما بدأ المهندس ابراهيم يخبر أسرته أن مدينتهم التي يعيشون فيها، تتعرض لخطر كبير، خطر الغرق، بل خطر الإنجراف أمام سيل الماء الذي سيندفع بقوة رهيبة، وبكميات ضخمة، إذا ما تحطم السد الذي يحجز مياه الوادي خلفه. أدركت الأسرة أن الأب واقع لا محالة في مشكلة وخاصة أن المجلس البلدي تذرع بعدم وجود ميزانية لإصلاح وترميم السد، وأن الشتاء على الأبواب، تتعاون الأسرة على إيجاد حل لهذه المشكلة ويبدأ كل فرد من أفرادها باقتراح، حتى بدا رأي الصغيرة "هند" معقولاً وهو الإعلان عن مسابقة يتم فيها حفر الخنادق على جانبي السد التي سوف تستوعب المياه التي ستندفع من السد باتجاه البلدة، وبدأ العمل، وابتدأ الحفر، وأخذت السواعد تضرب الأرض بالمعول، وكان التنافس شديداً بين أبناء البلدة، حتى بدت عيون المهندس إبراهيم، وأسرته، مسؤول المجلس البلدي تتنقل بين السد، والحفر، والشمس... حتى إذا كان الوقت المحدد لنهاية المسابقة قبل غروب الشمس بساعة، توقف العمل، وبدأ القياس، وكان التقييم، وصرخ الفائزون فرحاً، واستلموا جائزتهم من يد مسؤول المجلس البلدي سلمها بعد أن شكرهم جميعاً.
"السد" قصة تربوية تعلَم الأولاد أهمية التعاون والمشورة وحب البلد والشعور بالمخاطر التي يمكن تداهمه، وبذل المال والتضحية في سبيله، وأن على الجميع التعامل مع الحياة بحلوها ومرَها، وأن الحياة ليست نعيماً منبسطاً دائماً، وإنما هي مغالبة وصراع، وتحدٍ للأهوال والأخطار.
