تبدأ رواية مرغريت دوراس في تللك الفترة. يعيش كل من الأم وجوزيف البالغ العشرين من عمره وسوزان التي تبلغ السادسة عشرة، حياة قاسية في بيتهم الخشبي الخرب. لك يفارق الأمل الأم التي تحسب وتخطط، ولكن تملكها جنون حريص، يمتزج بالحيلة والوعي، مرده خوفها من رحيل ولديها النهائي، وهي تعرف أن هذا الرحيل قادم حتما.
