ألكسندر دوماس (1802-1870)، كاتب فرنسي وضع عدداً كبيرا من الأعمال المسرحية والروايات التاريخية، لقب بـ"دوماس الأب" لأن ولده غير الشرعي، الذي أشتهر كروائي وكاتب مسرحي، كان يعرف باسم "دوماس الابن"، تميز إنتاجه الأدبي بالجودة والغزارة، إذ نشر بتوقيعه نحو 1200 كتاب لكن كثيراً منها جاء نتيجة مشاركة الآخرين في الإنتاج، أو تكليف البعض بتنفيذ أفكاره لقاء أجر والاسترشاد بتوجيهاته ومن أشهر رواياته: الفرسان الثلاثة، والكونت دي مونت كريستو.
والرواية التي نحن بصدد الحديث عنها الزنبقة السوداء، تروي هذه الرواية، قصة رجل هولندي يدعى كرونيليوس فان بيرل، الذي أحب الزهور وعمل على استنبات زنبقة سوداء للفوز بالجائزة الكبرى، لكنه فاز، بعد اعتقاله بوشاية من جاره اسحق بوكستل، بقلب ابنة حارس السجن روز الجميلة، وقد صدر الكتاب حاملاً بين دفتيه تلك القصة بنصيها العربي والإنكليزي بأسلوب سهل ولغة مبسطة وذلك بهدف مزيد من الفائدة العلمية للطلاب والناشئة للتعرف أكثر على تلك الرائعة الروائية العالمية.
