تندرج الرواية ضمن الفنتازيا التاريخية في زمان ومكان متخيلين، حيث الاعتماد على الخيول والسيوف. تقع مملكة البقاء، بين مملكتي ياقوتة والهيجاء. تقع الحرب المقيتة، وتحتل المملكتان المجاورتان معظم أرجاء البقاء. يقتل ملك ياقوتة ملك البقاء وجل أهله، فيفر ابن أخ الملك، الأمير قصي، إلى جبال اليُبْس، ويختبئ هناك
الكثبة هي صحراء ذات قبائل كثيرة في البقاء. شيخ كل القبائل عامر يقتله ملك الهيجاء أثناء احتلال الأخير للبقاء. تمر الأيام ويصبح الزبير –حفيد عامر- شيخ قبائل الكثبة. وتمر السنوات، ويضع الزبير خطة محكمة لتحرير البقاء
وهذه الخطة المعقدة التي أمضى الزبير سنوات يحضر لها، ينفذها بدقة ويجمع أقوى رجال البقاء وأهمهم للثورة ضد المملكتين العدوتين. ويهدف لإعادة الأمير قصي – الذي غدا أسطورة كذبها الكثيرون – إلى الحكم
وخلال ثورة الزبير ومن معه، يواجه الصعوبات والمكائد ويضحي بالغالي والنفيس لإنجاح مخططه. مما يخلق له أعداءً كُثرا يتفقون ويتحدون على التخلص منه. بل ويصبح قتله الهدف الوحيد لحياة كل منهم !
رواية تتحدث عن الصراع بين الحق والباطل، والخير والشر في الحياة، وتبرز التناقض بين الوفاء والخيانة، وتتضمن فلسفات عميقة في الحياة، وكيف من الممكن للمرء أن يضحي ويتخذ أصعب القرارات للوصول إلى أهدافه! وكيف يفني المرء عمره في سبيل الانتقام!
