خيَّم اليأس على فيرا. أنَّبت نفسها بشدة، لأنها لم تُقدم اليوم صباحاً على اصطحاب سونيا معها، وتركتها لوحدها. أجل، من غير المريح زيارة إنسان لم يسبق التعرف عليه وهي تصطحب الطفلة.
أجل، كنا لا نزال في الصباح الباكر، وسونيا كانت لا تزال نائمة، كما أن الحديث الذي دار مع المحامي كان لا يبشر بالشر.
يستطيع الإنسان أن يخلق مبررات كثيرة، إلا أن الواقع يبقى واقعاً: طفل وحيد في الشقة، والمجرم المحترف يحتفظ بمفتاح لهذه الشقة، الأمر الذي يجعل حياة الطفل رهينة ثمينة في قبضته، وهذا ما يدركه الأخير جيداً.
"الخيبة" رواية تصور ذلك المجتمع الذي تنحدر فيه الأخلاق، ويسيطر فيه الحقد والضغينة. والكاتبة تحكي قصة إجبار الروح على الغرق في قانون الاستهلاك الرخيص، الهمجي واللاأخلاقي. لكن الخير السامي عندها لا يمنح عنقه لقبضة الشر، ويرفض الباطل ويدعو لبعث حياة جديدة أساسها الحق.
