إن الحرية لا تعني أن يفعل الإنسان ما يشاء ويترك ما يريد فذلك ما يتفق مع طبيعة شهوته ولا يتفق مع طبائع الوجود كما ركب عليه؛ ولكنها تعني أن يفعل الإنسان ما يعتقد أنه مكلف به وما فيه الخير لصالح البشر أجمعين.
وإيمان الإنسان بأنه مكلف هو أول خطوة في حريته؛ لأنها أول تحمل للمسؤولية التي ستناط به؛ وليس معنى هذا أنه حر ما دام لم يتحمل فإذا تحمل أصبح حراً مكلفاً على مبدأ الحرية الملتزمة كما يعبر الوجوديون ولكن المقصود أنه يبقى في فترة النظر والبحث إلى أن يقتنع بأنه مكلف فيكون قد اختار الحرية على الفراغ أو الفوضى أي عبودية التقاليد وما التصق به من الوسط الذي نشأ فيه.
فإذا اختار الحرية فقد آمن بأنه مكلف فيصبح حراً لأنه يصبح مسؤولاً؛ ويصبح مسؤولاً لأنه يصبح حراً.
