من الصعب أن تحدّد من هو كازنتزاكي في روايته هذه”حديقة الصخور”.. هو هنا كل وجوهه المتعدّدة وما أكثرها.. الرّوائيّ يكتب حكايته، والشاعر ينظم قصيدته، والمسافر يدوّن مذكّرات رحلاته، والفيلسوف يتأمّل العالم وذاته، والسّياسيّ يلاحظ انهيار العالم وأكاذيب الإيديولوجيا .. لقد تأثّر كازنتزاكي بنيتشة وبرغسون وماركس. فكره مزيج من كلّ تلك الفلسفات وفي روحه تمزّق متجانس بين السماويّ والوضعيّ وخارجهما، بين حكمة الشرق الأقصى مختزلة في بوذا والكثير من مسيحيّة الغرب وعلمانيّة الشّيوعيّين في العالم .. لا يقلقه تناقضه، بل يرى في ذلك عمق الوجود الإنسانيّ وخلاصة مأساته وخلاصه .. على امتداد صفحات الرّواية تطالعنا المدن والوجوه في رحلة لا تنتهي بين عشرات الأماكن ومئات البشر .. لا شيء من ذلك يهمّ فعلا بقدر ما تهمٌ التّجربة من ورائها والحكمة من وجودها.
