والواقع أن الحياة أكبر من الحب، وأن الإنسان يستطيع أن يرصد حياته لعمل عظيم يستغرق كل عقله وقلبه وكل مجهوده؛ كأن يتوخى تحقيق مذهب، أو اختراع آلة، أو توجيه شعب إلى غاية، أو نحو ذلك، وهذا النشاط جدير بأن تؤلَّف عنه الكتب وتُروى عن تفاصيله القصص. ولكن الحب هو السعادة، أو هو أقرب شيء إلى السعادة، وفيه تتبلور أخلاقنا، وتبدو في جوهرها الأصيل، وهو؛ أي الحب، يربينا ويستنبط منا أسمى ما في أخلاقنا؛ ولذلك حين نروي قصة عن الحب إنما نروي أيضًا أحسن ما في الطبيعة البشرية.
