تمثل "الجياد الهاربة" المرحلة الثانية في رباعية ميشيما "بحر الخصب" حي يفارق القارئ من عالم "ثلج الربيع" هذا العالم الشفيف والرقيق والمحلق، الذي عاش تحت سماته على امتداد صفحات تلك الرواية وعلى نحو مباشر ليجد نفسه أمام صورة رائعة ومتفننة لليابان، في ثلاثينيات القرن العشرين، بكل ما فعلت به هذه الفترة من اضطرابات، وتحولات عنيفة، يلفت حدها الأقصى في الانقلاب وسيطرة النزعة العسكرية العدوانية، وينعكس هذا في أن ايساو، بطل "الجياد الهاربة"، الذي يحمل العلامات الثلاث التي كانت من قبل للفتى كيواكي من "ثلج الربيع" يتجلى القارئ شاباً خلق للسيف، ينغمس حتى أطراف أصابعه في العمل السياسي، ويحلم بأن يتمجد في "السيبوكر" والشمس تتألق حمراء أمام ناظريه. وميشيما يضع ايساو موضع اختبار ضار، فهو إما ينجرف في قصة حب شديد الحميمية مع الفاتنة ماكير، ويتعرض للفساد، وإما أن يمضي إلى المصير الدامي، الذي ينتهي به إلى "السيبوكر".
