في الجهل، يقدم لنا ميلان كونديرا نصاً قوياً حول المنفى وإستحالة أي عودة حقيقية إلى البلد الذي غادرناه، ويحكي لنا بأسلوب حميمي وأحياناً فظ إزاء شخصياته، عن المنفى والإنسلاخ عن الجذور، وبالنتيجة عن الحنين والعودة ووحشة العودة الموسومة بالخيبة.
الشخصيتان محور هذا الكتاب هما إيرينا وجوزيف اللذان تفاهما التاريخ بعيداً عن وطنهما، ويقرران العودة إلى بلدهما في إجازة قصيرة، يجربان حالات لمِّ الشمل لكن الأحداث لا تجري كما يتوقعان، وتأتي المشاعر والأحاسيس المتناقضة لتشويه الصورة المعتادة عن العودة إلى البلد.
شخصيات ميلان كونديرا تذهب وتأتي وتسعى للرسو في مكان ما، تتقاطع المصائر وتتصادم وتخفق، وعندئذٍ تمتزج المشاعر المتناقضة بينما يبقى وَجْهُ الجهل موجوداً في كل مكان، كلّي الوجود: جهلٌ بالبلد، جهلٌ بالتطورات والتبدلات، وأيضاً جهلٌ بالأشخاص في ما يتعلق بتشابهاتهم، بواسطة لعبة تزييف الذاكرة أو هشاشة العلاقات.
في نهاية المطاف، تبرهن الجهل أنها رواية آسرة وأن كونديرا يصفعنا بحقائقه، المحتومة والمربكة، المتشائمة والحالمة، حول الشيوعية والعلاقات الإنسانية والعلاقات الزوجية وسوء الفهم الغرامي، وأمور أخرى كثيرة جداً... ولكن كيف يمكن للمرء أن يقارب هذا العدد من الموضوعات، وبمنتهى الدقة، في هذا العدد الضئيل من الصفحات؟... هذا سر كونديرا...
