آنا سويل: رِوائيةٌ إنجليزيةٌ وُلِدتْ عامَ ١٨٢٠م. تلقَّتْ تَعليمًا جيدًا في البيتِ على يدِ أمِّها، التي كانتْ تُجِيدُ الكتابةَ للأطفال. في عُمرِ الرابعةَ عشرةَ أُصِيبَ كاحِلُها إصابةً خطيرةً منعَتْها مِنَ المَشْي، وظلَّتْ بقيةَ حياتِها تَعتمدُ في انتقالاتِها على عَربةٍ يَجرُّها حِصان، ممَّا عمَّقَ صِلتَها بالخُيول. بينَ عامَيْ ١٨٧١م و١٨٧٧م كتبَتْ مخطوطةَ رِوايتِها الوحيدةِ «الجَمال الأَسْود». كانَتِ الروايةُ في الأصلِ مُوجَّهةً للكبارِ ممَّن يَتعامَلُون معَ الخيولِ لحضِّهم على حُسْنِ مُعامَلتِها، لكنَّها أصبحتْ من أَشْهرِ رِواياتِ الأَطْفال. تُوفِّيتْ «سويل» في أبريل عامَ١٨٧٨م بعدَ خمسةِ أشهرٍ من نشْرِ رِوايتِها.

لقد نٌشرت رواية الجمال الأسود في عام 1877، وشهدت تلك الفترة التى نشرت فيها ظهور عديد من الجمعيات المدافعة عن حقوق الحيوان بجانب حركات نسائية وأخرى تسعى للإصلاح الاجتماعي. بالرغم من أن الرواية موجهة في الأساس للقراء الصغار إلا أنها أسهمت في لفت الأنظار الى كيفية معاملة الخيول، ويرى البعض أنها أسهمت بشكل واضح في الإقلاع عن ممارسات سيئة مثل استخدام الزمام الكابح الذي يؤذي الحصان. بذلك استطاعت هذه الرواية أن تصبح سبيلا لسلوك إنسانى يتبعه كل من يقرأها
