فى صباح يوم الحادث ذهبت كارلوتا إلى فندق بيكادللى واستأجرت غرفة تحت اسم مدام فان دوسن، وفى الساعة السابعة ذهبت كارلوتا إلى الغرفة التى استأجرتها، وفى الثامنة والنصف حضرت ليدى أدجوير إلى الفندق وسألت عن مدام فان دوسن فأرشدوها إلى غرفتها فصعدت إليها، وهناك تبادلت المرأتان الثياب، ووضعت كارلوتا على رأسها شعراً مستعاراً يشبه شعر جان ولكنسون ثم غادرت الفندق وعليها ثياب جان، وذهبت إلى مقابلة زوجها معلنة شخصيتها الحقيقية واثقة من أنها ستتمكن من إثبات وجودها فى الفندق.. وهكذا ارتكبت جان ولكنسون جريمتها الأولى وقتلت زوجها..
