يضطر "بيتركينيس" للهروب إلى مدينة أصابها الدمار بعد اتهامه بجريمة قتل كان قد اقترفها أحد زملاء الدراسة. وقضى "بيتر" قرابة ثماني سنوات في هذه المدينة المهجورة في عزلة عن العالم، وقد غير اسمه واتخذ بيتاً قام بترميمه ليسكن فيه وحده، ولكنه لم ينس إطلاقاً اتهام صديق الدراسة له بتلك التهمة النكراء. ولذلك أخذ يدبر خطة محكمة لكي يقع عدوه اللعين في شباكها. تعرفت عليه "لورين" الكاتبة الجميلة وعملت على مساعدته بكل الطرق. وارتاحت إليه وربطت بينهما أواصر الحب. وتمر أحداث مختلفة تقشعر لها الأبدان ولكن في النهاية يتمكن "بيتر" من تنفيذ خطته بحذافيرها ويوقع عدوه في المصيدة. فيقبض عليه رجال الشرطة بعد أن يعترف بارتكابه جريمة القتل وببراءة "بيتر" من التهمة المنسوبة إليه.
