"تركتني صاحبة الفندق، مدام لومرسييه، وحدي في غرفتي بعد أن ذكرتني في كلمات قصيرة بكل المزايا المادية، والمعنوية التي يتمتع بها "بنسيون عائله لومرسييه" توقفت متصباً في مواجهة المرأة وسط هذه الحجرة التي سأسكنها لفترة قصيرة أنظر إلى الغرفة وأنظر إلى نفسي". في هذه الغرفة تدور أحداث رواية الروائي الفرنسي هنري باريوس. فالكاتب، الذي هو البطل، يطل من فجوة في حائط غرفته بأحد الفنادق، كما يطل من أعماق ذاته على أبطال الغرفة المجاورة المتغيرين والمتنوعين، يتابع بشغف ما يجري من أحداث، لينقل بأمانه صوراً من الحياة، ويصف بدقة المشاعر التي تربط بين البشر، متخطياً الجزئي إلى الكلي والخاص إلى العام، متجاوزاً الوجود إلى العدم، مستعيناً بالعلم والأدب، مستثمراً الفطرة والفطنة، مستشفاً الإحساس والحدس، بحثاً عن الحقيقة، حقيقة الحياة وحقيقة الكون، نشداناً للراحة والخلاص، راحة الضمير وخلاص النفس.
