قال عنه الحافظ ابن كثير - رحمه الله - في البداية والنهاية: " المشهور بالتصانيف الكثيرة، النافعة، الشائعة، الذائعة في الرقائق وغيرها، وكان صدوقاً، حافظاً، ذا مروءة ".
