تتميز لغتنا العربية عن غيرها بسمات من أهمها: قابليتها للاشتقاق وموضوع الاشتقاق يدخل ضمن علم الصرف وقديما كان الصرف لا ينفصل عن النحو إذا كان علماء النمو القدامى يعدونها علما واحدا لكن ما لبث علم الصرف أن انفصل عن علم النحو وأصبح كل منها علما قائما بذاته وتكمن أهمية علم الصرف في انه نستطيع من خلاله معرفة أصول كلام العرب من الزوائد الداخلية عليه ونظرا لتلك الأهمية العظمى لعلم الصرف فقد قدم هذا الكتاب بعض الجوانب المتعلقة بعلم الصرف فبدأ أولا التعريف بعلم الصرف والميزان الصرفي الذي تقاس به أنبيه الكلام كما تناول أوزان الفعل وقسمه إلى عدة تقسمات اعتماد على أسس معينة كما تناول المعاني التي تفيدها الزيادة في الأفعال إلى قضية مهمة وهي مسألة تعدي الفعل ولزومه وأشار إلى الفعل المبني للمجهول كما وضح كيف يتم تصريف الفعل وإسناده إلى الضمائر كما عرض لتوكيد الفعل وأحكامه ومن القضايا التي عالجها كذلك المجرد والمزيد والمشتقات فتناول اسم الفاعل واسم المفعول والصفة المشبه إلى غير ذلك من المشتقات كما أن من الموضوعات التي تعالجها الاسم الصحيح والمنقوص والمقصود والمحدود وجميع التكسير وكان يضرب الأمثلة على كل قضية يطرقها وتطرق إلى مسألة الإدغام فوضح أنواعه ومتى يحدث الإدغام وما يدغم وما لا يدغم.
