هذا الكتاب التصوف الإسلامي، وهو كتاب شغلت به نفسي نحو تسع سنين، وأنفقت في تأليفه من الجهد والعافية ما أنفقت في أعوام عجاف، لو ابتلي بمثلها اصبر الصابرين واشجع الشجعان، لألقي السيف وطوي اللواء، فقد كنت في حرب مع الناس ومع الزمان، وياويح من ابتلته المقادير بإفك الناس وغدر الزمان.
وينقسم هذا الكتاب إلي قسمين: التصوف في الأدب، والتصوف في الأخلاق، وقد كان هذا الموضوع - فيما يظهر - غامضاً أشد الغموض، فقد طلب مجلس الأساتذة بكلية الآداب أن تقدم له مذكرة نشرح بها الغرض من هذا الكتاب ليقبل أو يرفض جعله موضوع رسالة لامتحان الدكتوراه، وقد أحببنا يومئذ بأننا نريد ان نبين، كيف استطاع التصوف أن يخلق فناً في الأدب، ومذهباً في الأخلاق، وهو موضوع يستحق الدرس بلا جدال.
هذا وقد يجد القارىء ما يثيره في مواضع كثيرة من هذا الكتاب، فإن وجد ما يشوكه ويؤذيه، فليرجع إلي ما شاكه و آذاه بالدرس والتأمل مرة أو مرتين أو مرات، ليوافق أو يعترض علي هدى وبصيرة، وليتذكر أن الدراسات الفلسفية لا تقوي ولا تجود، إلا إن سلمت سلامة تامة من الرياء وتخوف العواقب، والمؤلف يرجو أن يتذكر القارىء أيضاً أن الصوفية كانوا من أقطاب الحرية الفكرية، فمحاربة هذه الحرية، باسم الغيرة عليهم خطأ، لا يقع فيه رجل حصيف.
