هذا الكتاب هو السادس عشر من كتب دائرة المعارف الإسلامية وهو يتناول التصوف في الإسلام، وهو موضوع ثار حوله في الأيام الأخيرة جدل كثير، ويضم الكتاب مقالين أحدهما لمستشرق فرنسي معروف في قصص التصوف تخصصاً على به صيته واشتهر بالإنصاف فيما يكتب، وهو الأستاذ لويس ما سينيون.
والآخر لمصري كبير من أئمة المفكرين الذين جمعوا بين القديم والحديث، فقد درس في مصر وفي فرنسا، وتولى كرسي الأستاذية في الفلسفة الإسلامية في جامعة القاهرة.
في المقالة الأولى تحدث المؤلف عن أصل الكلمة وأصول التصوف، وشأن الصوفية في الجماعة الإسلامية، ومعنى الاتحاد وتطوره في تاريخ التصوف، وسمات التصوف الأخرى.
أما في المقالة الثانية فتحدث المؤلف مصطفى عبد الرزاق عن نشأة كلمة "الصوفي" ومتصوف وأصلها، أساس التصوف وما مر به من الأدوار، الولاية وصلتها بالتصوف وكرامات الأولياء، نبوة النساء وولايتهن وصلة المرأة بالتصوف الإسلامي. رابعة العدوية نموذج لمرأة متصوفة.
