كان من حظي أن تثور- بعد وصولي إلى فرنسا بفترة قصيرة- معركة أدبية كبرى بين أنصار "النقد القديم" وأنصار "النقد الجديد". فقد أتاح لي ذلك أن أعيش هذه المعركة الهامة يومًا بيوم, وأن أتابع بدقة كل المؤلفات التي صدرت أثناءها والتي كتبها النقاد والمشتركون فيها. وترد أهمية هذه المعركة إلى أنها طرحت بشكل واضح مشكلة علاقة النقد الأدبي بالعلوم الاجتماعية, وقد مست بذلك كثيرًا من النقاط الجوهرية التي يتناولها علم الاجتماع الأدبي.
والكتاب الذي أقدم له عبارة عن سلسلة من المقالات التي كتبتها عقب عودتي من فرنسا في نهاية عام 1967. وقد نشرت هذه المقالات- ماعدا اثنتان منها- في مجلة "الكاتب" خلال عام 1968. وهاتان المقالتان هما: "التصوير الأدبي للانحراف الاجتماعي" و"نحو الدراسة الاجتماعية للظواهر الأدبية".
وهذه المقالات العشر جميعًا, التي أصبحت تكون فصول الكتاب, تمثل في الواقع مشروعًا متكاملًا, الهدف منه رسم المعالم الأساسية لعلم الاجتماع الأدبي. غير أنني وجدت أن المدخل الضروري لذلك هو التعريف بالمعركة الهامة التي دارت بين "النقد القديم" و"النقد الجديد" في فرنسا لصلتها الوثيقة بالموضوع. وإذا كانت القاعدة الأساسية في البحث العلمي أن المسح ينبغي أن يسبق التعمق, فإن هذا الكتاب لا يطمح إلى أكثر من مسح الميدان وتخطيط الإطار النظري للموضوع, تمهيدًا للقيام بدراسات متعمقة في مختلف جوانبه.
