عمل موردخاي فعنونو لمدة 9 سنوات كفنّي في مجمّع ديمونا، حيث تجري أبحاث إسرائيل السرية في الحقل النووي. ثم صرفوه من الوظيفة عام 1985 بسبب تعاطفه مع العرب وتأييده لحقوقهم. غادر إسرائيل في رحلة انتهت به إلى مدينة سيدني، أستراليا، حيث التقى برجل دين انغليكاني (أحد مؤلفي هذا الكتاب) واعتنق على يديه الديانة المسيحية.
اقتنع فعنونو ي ظل إيمانه الجديد بضرورة فضح نشاطات إسرائيل الخفية من أجل مصلحة السلام في العالم. فجاء الانتقام خاطفاً وقاسياً، وقام عملاء الموساد باختطاف فعنونو واقتياده إلى إسرائيل لكي يمثل أمام المحكمة خلف أبواب مغلقة في القدس.
أُدين فعنونو بالتهم الثلاثة: التجسس والخيانة وإفشاء أسرار الدولة، وحُكم عليه بالسجن لمدة 18 سنة. جرى ترشيحه لنيل جائزة نوبل للسلام. ورفضت المحكمة استئناف الحكم. وهو الآن في الحجز الانفرادي.
كتاب لا بدّ من قراءته لمتابعة القصة المذهلة التي جعلت من موردخاي فعنونو، اليهودي الشرقي (من المغرب أصلاً) حديث العالم أجمع وطرحت موضوع الخيار النووي في منطقة الشرق الأوسط فاتحة الباب على مصراعيه.
الغزو الإسرائيلي الذي اجتاح لبنان عام 1982 كان أحد الأسباب الرئيسية التي دفعت فعنونو إلى القيام بعمله الجريء، وأيقظت في نفسه صوت الضمير المسؤول والمتمرّد على الطغيان الصهيوني الغاشم.
