هذا هو كتاب "البيان والتبين للجاحظ" وهو، لا جرم، أسير كتب أبى عثمان وأكثرها تداولاً، وأعظمها نفعاً وعائدة، فبه تخرج كثير من الأدباء، واستقامت ألسنتهم على الطريقة المثلى. فهو أستاذ أرهاط متعاقبة من المتأدبين، وهو شيخ جماعات متتابعة ممن صقلوا ذوقهم بصقال الجاحظ، ورفعوا فنهم بالتأمل فى فنه وعبقريته. فيه يقول هلال الحسن بن عبد الله العسكرى فى الصناعتين، عند الكلام على كتب البلاغة: "وكان أكبرها وأشهرها كتاب البيان والتبين، لأبى عثمان عمرو بن بحر الجاحظ. وهو لعمرى كثير الفوائد، جم المنافع، لما اشتمل عليه من الفصول الشريفة، والفقر اللطيفة، والخطب الرائعة، والأخبار البارعة، وما حواه من أسماء الخطباء والبلغاء، وما نبه عليه من مقاديرهم فى البلاغة والخطابة وغير ذلك من فنونه المختارة، ونعومته المستحسنة. إلا أن الإبانة عن حدود البلاغة وأقسام البيان والفصاحة، مبثوثة فى تضاعيفه، ومنتثرة فى أثنائه، فهى ضالة بين الأمثلة، لا توجد إلا بالتأمل الطويل، والتصفح الكثير". وهو كلام رجل قد خبر الكتاب ورازه، ولكنه لم يشأ أن يرسم لنا صورة مفصلة واضحة.
