"البَّوابَةُ الثَّامنة" سبعُ بوّاباتٍ لدمشق... هكذا أخبروني... هكذا في الكُتُب... لكِنَّ دمشقَ تهمُسُ... هنا ثماني بوّابات... البوّابةُ الثامنة للغريب... الذي يفتحُ قلبهُ لدمشق... وأنا أهمُسُ... أنتِ المدينة الماوراء الزمن... البوّابةُ الثامنة هي البابُ إليَّ... شهيق خلفَ شهيقُ... شهيق الكلمات...".
في البوابة الثامنة؛ المجموعة الشعرية للشاعرة اليزابيث كورندال، كل قصيدة من القصائد تعد بوابة ما، ولكن مهما تعددت صور هذه البوابات فإن الرمزية الشعرية توحي للقارئ - من خلال النصوص في المجموعة - بأنها بوابة تحتضن كل الغرباء كما احتضنت تاريخ دمشق من قبل، وبالتالي هي بوابة الروح الباحثة دائماً عن مستقرها، وكينونتها، وهي روح الشاعرة (الإنسانة) قبل أي شيء، لكونها عاشت في دمشق، وحينما اضطرت للغياب عنها، غابت عنها الروح.
لذلك، فإن دمشق حاضرة في وجدان الشاعرة بأرضها وناسها، وياسمينها الأبيض، لقد عبّرت الشاعرة كورندال أصدق تعبير عن هذه المشاعر الفياضة في المقدمة التي افتتحت بها المجموعة (قل كلمة صديق... وادخل!): "... تملك دمشق خاصيةً أن تجعل الضيف صديق نفسه، يحصل الزائر على روح المدينة الأنقى والأعمق سحراً.
الشعراء والقديس بولص اصطحبوا قلبي إلى دمشق ودمشق علمتني ما هو حيٌّ وما هو متحوّل، ليست دمشق أجمل المدن فقط، دمشق حالةٌ وكل إنسانٍ هناك: كل نافذةٍ وسور، كل بيتٍ وياسمينةٍ ووردة تفيض بروح دمشق هذه...
رفاق رحلتي إلى مجموعتي "البوابة الثامنة" وإلى دمشق، عدا قراءاتي لنزار قباني ومحمود درويش وطبعاً أدونيس، كان قلبين دافئين، بوصلتين ذواتا معرفة... دمشق وكل صحبتي من مختلف الأنواع في سوريا، لن أذكر أحداً ولا أنسى أحداً: شكراً لكرمكم، لحنانكم ومحبتكم...
