استقى برشت موضوع هذه الرواية من النص المسرحي "أوبرا الشحاذ" للكاتب البريطاني الكلاسيكي جون جاي , فكتبها أولا كنص مسرحي بعنوان "أوبرا البنسات الثالثة" ثم قدمها كسيناريو لفيلم سينمائي, وأخيرا قدمها كرواية. نستطيع أن نقول أنها تنهض على فكرة إدانة المجتمع البرجوازي من خلال تركيزه على فقر العالم وهذا الكم الكبير من الشر الموجود في النفس البشرية. كتبت الرواية عام 1934 ليصحح بها استقى برشت موضوع هذه الرواية من النص المسرحي "أوبرا الشحاذ" للكاتب البريطاني الكلاسيكي جون جاي , فكتبها أولا كنص مسرحي بعنوان "أوبرا البنسات الثالثة" ثم قدمها كسيناريو لفيلم سينمائي, وأخيرا قدمها كرواية. نستطيع أن نقول أنها تنهض على فكرة إدانة المجتمع البرجوازي من خلال تركيزه على فقر العالم وهذا الكم الكبير من الشر الموجود في النفس البشرية. كتبت الرواية عام 1934 ليصحح بها المؤلف أخطاءه التي وقع فيها في النص المسرحي فتبدو الرواية أكثر تحديدا وبعيدة عن التجريد والغنائية, وهي نموذج حي للرواية الملحمية ذات الأبعاد التي يلجأ إليها الكاتب بالتدخل والتعليق والتهكم والتفلسف, وهي الرواية الوحيدة التي كتبها برشت, وقد فتنت الرواية الشاعر المسرحي المصري نجيب سرور فأعاد تقديمها في نص بعنوان : ملك الشحاتين
