هذه الرواية هى العمل السابع لميلان كونديرا، تحكي، بتواز، قصتي حب؛ إحداهما في القرن الثامن عشر الذي شهد أجواء التحرر والانفتاح، وهي بطيئة وذات طعم، أما الأخرى، فتدور في عصرنا، وهي سريعة وباعثة على السخرية. ويدعونا الكاتب، وهو يُمجّد البطء في هذه الرواية، إلى الوعي بالوشيجة السرية التي تربط البطء بالذاكرة، وتصل السرعة بالنسيان، وفي هذا العالم الذي لا تنفك فيه سرعة كل شيء تتنامى، يرى كونديرا أننا أضعنا الذاكرة التي تفضي بنا إلى اللذة وتمكننا من الشعور بالمتعة في عيش الحاضر. يبرز كونديرا في هذه الرواية مفهوم علاقات الحب الراهنة التي لم تعد تجسد الشعور الحميم بين ذاتين، بل إنها نوع من الاستعراض المصطنع أمام الآخرين. بهذا المعنى، فإن رواية البطء تفكير في إعادة رسم الحدود بين فضاءات الحميم والخاص من جهة والعام من جهة أخرى، في عالم غدا فيه كل شيء محكوماً بالسرعة والعجلة. في هذا العمل، نعثر مجدداً على عناصر الغرابة والخفة والهزل، وهي العناصر المشكلة لأسلوب كونديرا، كما نجد فيها آراء حول العالم والسياسة والمثقفين ووسائل الإعلام والحب والرغبة والتحرر الجنسي؛ وهي المواضيع الأثيرة عند هذا الكاتب الكبير.
