فى روايته الجميلة هذه، والتي صدرت للمرة الأولى عام 1978، يكشف الكاتب الكبير خيري شلبي صفحة من أسرار ريف الدلتا في بدايات الخمسينيات. حيث ينسج عالمًا واسع الثراء عن «طلعت» الذي يبحث عن أبيه «القاضي» الذي زار بلدتهم لأيام تزوج فيها الأم «توحيدة»، ثم اختفى ولم يظهر أبدًا. وتتبُّع الشرطة والأهالي لحقيبة «الحاج سليم» مقاول الأنفار التي اختفت من بيت عمدة القرية بما تحتويه من «كنز» هائل، أغلب الظن أنه من الحشيش، بعد مقتل المؤذن، الذي كان متوقَّعًا أن يصبح الشاهد الوحيد على السارق، في الليلة نفسها. وبلغته التي تعرف هؤلاء الفلاحين، وتنتمي إليهم، وتقبض على حقيقتهم، يحكي لنا خيري شلبي عما طال الفلاحين من قهر السلطة، ومكرها، وفساد الأفندية الذين يعملون من أجلها. في «الأوباش» يأسر خيري شلبي كلًّا من أبطاله وقرائه بحكايات أخّاذة، وتحقيقات رسمية، وشكاوى كيدية، ونمائم لا تنتهي. فيصحبنا جميعًا إلى عالم ساحر نود لو بقينا فيه رغم ما فيه من آلام.
